A town people visit and then stay in
Most people meet Dahlonega as a day trip. The square is lit for Christmas, the shops are open late, and the drive home feels longer than the drive up.
- The visitors bureau describes Dahlonega as one hour north of Atlanta at the end of GA-400, and lists Atlanta at 71 miles. Discover Dahlonega (visitors bureau)
- The brick building in the middle of the square is the 1836 Lumpkin County Courthouse, now the Dahlonega Gold Museum. Georgia State Parks calls it one of the oldest courthouse buildings in Georgia. Georgia State Parks
The University of North Georgia has its campus next to downtown, and the countryside around town holds wineries, the Chestatee River and the foothills of the Blue Ridge.
